About Us!

We Specialize in Cats!

HOW TO CONTACT US

Friends of Pets of Klamath Basin is a federally tax exempt local, all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving the lives of cats in Klamath County, OR. Our membership is composed of local residents. We are totally grassroots! Our three members of our Board of Directors (Kathleen Williams, Geneva Jackson, and Faye Robinson) hold the powers of the organization as permitted through bylaws. We formed on January 17, 2001.

We work to end cruelty, help others spay/neuter, and save the lives of cats!

Our goal is accomplished through the following: (1) An effective Spay/Neuter Program for local residents to end overpopulations; (2) A Rescue Program for abandoned/unwanted felines; (3) An Adoption Program to place healthy felines into loving, long-term homes; (4) Educating the public on the facts/causes of animal cruelty, neglect, and overpopulation; (5) Creating options and alternatives for local residents to preserve the lives of cats, rather than the method of euthanasia applied by the Klamath Humane Society. We believe in our no-kill program and that cats should not have to live a life in a small cage.

Our Rescue/Adoption Program: We Work with Cats!

We are a “no-kill” organization for felines in that none are destroyed because they run out of adoption time, are shy, aged, or injured. Once a feline enters our program, each receives the best care possible and an assurance each will be adopted into a long-term, loving home or have a place at “Cat Haven.” We do not accept feral felines. We do not have facilities to take in canines.

Our style of program at our Store and Adoption Center is basically a “free-roaming” environment for cats during the day because we believe cats are healthier and happier if not confined to cage life. Up until June 10, 2004, we maintained an open store in that all cats mingled with shoppers in our 5,000 sq. ft facility. Sadly, on that date we felt forced to separate the Store from the Adoption Center and keep the free-roaming environment for our cats under lock. The purpose is to provide increased security for our cats.  Last year 3 cats were stolen and we have faced increasing numbers of walk-in people just wanting to pet cats and requiring constant supervision.

If you are seriously considering adopting, please contact us and visit our Adoption Center. The increased security may seem to impose an inconvenience but once inside the Adoption Room, hopefully you will feel a sense that the cats are more relaxed and safe. At night, most of the felines retain their freedom. Because the front of our store has large windows, many felines and passersby exchange greetings. We believe that an adult feline may require 3 to 12 months to gain a home, and the cat should not have to spend that time in a cage. Felines receiving medication or newly inducted are retained in our 36x30" stainless steel cages or large pens.

All of the cats in our Store and Adoption Center are available for adoption. None are mascots. They all need homes. We are selective regarding our adoptive homes and a handout regarding “Adoption Policies and Procedures” is easily available for you to read.

A specified donation is required for every cat that enters our Rescue/Adoption Program. This applies to all people making the request, regardless of ownership. The purpose is to help fund our Rescue/Adoption program, which is expensive. Since we limited area at our Adoption Center, limited foster homes, and rarely euthanize, we have limited space.

We do euthanize. Felines that a veterinarian recommends be euthanized for health reasons, those that are excessively aggressive towards other cats or people, and Felv/FIV or FIP positive felines are euthanized. President, Kathleen Williams, is certified to perform euthanasia.

The number of felines retained in our Rescue/Adoption Program at any one time ranges between 65 and 100. A minimum of 50 and a maximum of 100 can be located at the Rescue Facility (Cat Haven) in a rural setting. The aged, shy, and less adoptable live here. This facility also serves as a temporary place for recovery of illness, such as ringworm, upper respiratory, distemper, and broken bones. The remainder are either at the Store and Adoption Center or in foster homes growing up, such a kittens.

Education!

We advertie weekly in the Herald and News FPKB about the lives of cats, circumstances and outcomes. These stories are factual and are intended to be informative. Many speak to the hardships that cats endure. Our organization also provides information regarding our statistics on the rate of adoption, death, and numbers of cats that are homeless. We also serve the public by speaking frankly about the outcome of felines that are taken to the local open-door shelter (Klamath Humane Society) which has a high death rate for cats. Publishing our Income and Expense Statements and monthly statistics is further information to help the general public understand the difficult nature of animal rescue. We also provide general information on health care for cats and dogs.
