Our Seniors for Seniors Companionship Program is designed to kindle the benefits of companionship between two important creatures, a Senior Citizen and a Senior Feline. Activities such as sharing, entertaining, taking-care-of, giving-attention-to, humor, silliness, hugging, and cuddling are a big part of companionship. We believe these activities stimulate good health and longevity. The purpose of the program is solely to provide companionship and alleviate loneliness. We have a limited number of felines available for this program so we are choosing our adoptive homes carefully.

Many of our senior felines are very affectionate and experience loneliness because each wants to be petted, loved, and talked to on a daily basis. At this point in their lives most do not want to share their home with another pet. They want their very own dedicated lap to be available and someone with which to interact on an attentive level.

Cats are smart. Intelligent might even be a better word. And just because they are older does not mean they are washed up as a companion pet. Rather, it is the opposite. They go at a slower pace, can be less demanding, do not run up your curtains, know where the litter box is located, and may even expect YOU to adore THEM. They even still play! Our 12 year old Langley tosses those felt mice around on a daily basis and goes on walks with all the rest, most of whom are young and energetic. And, yes, they can have personality quirks. Freddie will kiss on your neck. Lenora will open your cabinet doors and maybe even take a nap in one. Rae will want to curl in your lap or hug your neck. And Star will stare at you until you pet her. We happen to think those quirks make them all the more interesting and endearing. A cat in good health can live up to the age of 18 and even 20 years.

If you enjoy felines and can put up with the shedding of hair, cleaning of the litter box, and a big chunk of independence in their attitude, participating in our Seniors for Seniors Program may be for you. If you are not sure about cats and do not want to tolerate their inconveniences, we suggest you not consider this program as it would not be successful.

We expect the Senior Citizens to eventually dearly love the felines that enter their homes. If you cannot love a cat then, again, this program is not for you. Our organization is committed to placing our felines only in homes that are loving and long term.

We have told our Senior Felines that we have expectations of them! They are to be your best friend, to listen when you want to talk seriously or ramble on about things, and most importantly to actually love you back..

So, after reading this if you are still interested in further information about the Seniors to Seniors Companionship Program, please read the attached specifics and complete the Application.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Williams Jackie Lockhart Faye Robinson

President Vice-President Secretary/Treasurer

Program Qualifications for the Senior Citizen:

1. Minimum age for a Senior Citizen is 60 years old.

2. Minimum age for a Senior Feline is 7 years old.

3. Adoption Fee is $20.00. This is not refundable.

4. The Senior Feline is the only companion pet in the household.

5. The owner must be the Senior Citizen.

6. Should the Senior Citizen no longer be able to provide care then the feline must be returned to our Rescue/Adoption Program.

7. Should the Senior Citizen no longer desire to have the feline in the home, then FPKB will pickup the feline within 24 hours of notification.

8. The home will be inspected on-site to insure that the environment is suitable for a feline, in regards to safety, cleanliness, and appropriateness of condtions.

9. The owner must provide a sufficient quality food, water, reasonable level of comfort, such as warmth and sunlight, and maintain an atmosphere that does not generate stress for the feline.

10. A contact person, preferably a family member outside the household, will be required.

11. If the Senior Citizen notices signs of illness, such as upper respiratory, not using the litter box, lethargy, etc., he/she is to immediately notify Kathleen Williams at 850-0750 (daytime).

Friends of Pets Will Provide the Following:

1. A listing of available Senior Felines, with descriptions, from which the Senior Citizen can visit, consider, and select the feline most suitable to their preferences. FPKB must agree with and approve the selection.

2. Once the adoption is approved and the home has been visited on-site, FPKB will deliver the feline to the Senior’s home. The Adoption Contract will clearly define the feline and identify any and all personality and significant physical traits.

3. The feline will be affectionate and healthy at the time of adoption with expectations that this good health will continue for some years, unless otherwise noted in the Adoption Contract.

4. An FPKB representative will visit the home monthly to trim nails and evaluate the health of the feline. Felines are known for not showing signs of illness until their condition is advanced. Early detection of illness by a FPKB is critical. We do not expect new owners to be equipped with this information.

5. Should the Senior Citizen fail to provide any item in No. 8, then FPKB has the right to immediately remove the feline from the premises.

6. Should the feline become ill in the adoptive home, FPKB will remove the feline from the home and seek veterinarian’s evaluation of the condition. Either FPKB or the Senior Citizen retains the power of deciding, based on the health issue, if the feline will be returned to the home. FPKB has no obligation to replace the feline with another feline should this occur.
